Call your Senator!

The Senate Confirmation Hearings for 6 Trump Nominees is set for next Wednesday, Jan 11! Here are our Colorado Senator's phone numbers: US Senator Michael Bennet (202) 224-5852 and US Senator Cory Gardner (202) 224-5941. Get thee to the telephone! I’d really love it if we could make some songs out of the following talking points. Anyone interested?

Rex Tillerson - Secretary of State nominee - ExxonMobile CEO - Having a CEO of one of the wealthiest and largest corporations on the planet as our Secretary of State is shot through with conflicts of interest. I feel his ability to put our country’s interests above his own economic ones is impossible, especially in regards to countries such as Russia where ExxonMobile has significant ties to the Putin government as well as plans to expand arctic drilling.

Mike Pompeo - CIA Director nominee - The Kansas congressman is most famous for leading the lengthy Benghazi investigation of Hillary Clinton. More importantly, he has publicly denounced efforts to rein in some of the most immoral counterterrorism programs of the post-Sept. 11 era - advocating a return to the bulk collection of Americans’ domestic calling records, denouncing President Obama’s decision to close C.I.A. black-site prisons and to require government interrogators to strictly adhere to the rules of the Army Field Manual.

Betsy DeVos - Education Secretary nominee - DeVos is dedicated to the expansion of charter schools and school vouchers and is aligned with Trump’s campaign proposal to shift $20 billion in federal education funding into state block grants to enroll children in charter and private schools. Defunding public education destabilizes our country and furthers the divide between opportunities for the rich vs. the poor.

Jefferson Beauregard Sessions - Attorney General nominee - His checkered record on race prompted the Senate to block him when he was nominated for a district judgeship in the 1980’s. Someone deemed unfit to be a federal judge should not to be in charge of overseeing and enforcing civil rights – for immigrants, for people of color, for the LGBTQ community. Harsh “law and order,” anti-immigrant, and strict drug sentencing policies have done nothing to make our country safer, but have filled our prisons with poor people and people of color. Sessions has opposed every recent Senate proposal to safeguard the LGBTQ community.

John Kelly - Department of Homeland Security nominee - This now retired Marine Corps general oversaw operations at Guantanamo for 3 years, calls for the building of the Wall, increased militarization of America’s Southern border, an aggressive crackdown on illegal immigration, and increased funding for the “Drug War” in Latin America.
